Kilombu Silver Amulet Collection

This 30 piece hand-made silver collection was created in Lijiang, Yunnan, China in April-May 2016. In collaboration with master silversmith Yang Can Jun, this series blending Naxi and Kilombola iconography. Kilombu is an ethnographic nation seen in the artwork of Cecê Nobre. The Naxi of Yunnan have a rich silversmithing culture, and have historically had a focus on the mastery of this craftsmanship through the mixing of materials and ideas between the Tibetan and Han cultures. Today, they are the only ethnic group in the world to maintain an active hieroglyphic writing system.  All the pieces of this collection were handmade using traditional silversmithing methods. No pieces created through the use of molds or modern machinery and all pieces being of 99.9% fine silver. All pieces were designed and produced by Cecê Nobre and silver master, Yang Can Jun, respectively.


This project and residency was organized by COARTPARK, a cultural-platform that aimed to protect and advance Yunnan craftsmanship heritage while looking for new ways to stimulate creation and creativity that grows from Yunnan’s historical reputation as a cultural hub on the Silk Road. In 2015, the organization created an artistic residency in Lijiang, Yunnan in order to bring craftsmen and artists together and generate convergences between different environments, practices and cultures. This residency consisted of work in the villages of the Naxi as well as the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Old Town Lijiang.
